They will purchase enough billboards and enough bus stop signs to alert people that it's National Problem Gambling Awareness Month and they'll have some little image. The way I did the nonprofit version of that in Nevada one year, I printed up a bunch of laminated signs, and I had an in that year at the Reno Transit Authority and I got the bus system to put my own laminated signs in the back of every bus and did that for a week, they allowed me to do it for a week, for free and I got a handful of clients, like out of nowhere, that had no idea that the Reno Problem Gambling Center existed, just because I put, if you have a gambling problem and a phone number and a picture of us in the busses. And what a huge impact that was for us. We brought in a couple of homeless, mentally ill people who were taking the bus and had no idea that there was nonprofit help available for them. So I went off on a rant there, I wanted you to know that education is a huge element in prevention navigate to this website
Thank you, prevention people and all of you that do any aspect of prevention. We're way behind drugs and alcohol in the world of information and prevention (mumbles). This next slide is gonna launch you into a whole bunch of data that we wanna give you about the Oregon 2008 Prevalence Study on youth gambling and their adult counterparts, their parents and I would like to let you know that you've been patiently listening to us for a solid hour, it's five minutes after one. This would be the perfect time to get up and stretch, and to get a drink of water and to go run to the restroom and wants to do that does that. Is there anything, Denise, that we could chat about that's just not super important? Into this absolute fabulous study that I put in very small print. So I am gonna read some of this off the slide for the people who may or may not be able to see it. - [Voiceover] Well, do we also want to, this is Denise E., let them know that these slides will be available to them. - [Voiceover] Oh, yes. Let's tell you where they're available. I'm going to put them up on the Reno Problem Gambling Center website, which is renopgc.org, Denise is gonna put them on - [Voiceover] The Quest website, which is questreno.com, oh my gosh, I never... - [Voiceover] It just went right out of your head? - [Voiceover] It just went right out of my head and it's also... - [Voiceover] available on the CASAT site. - [Voiceover] Exactly, which might be your easiest bet. - [Voiceover] And right here, we're being told that you can pull it up while you're on it with us, you can get these slides in the form of a handout and what we will promise you is that if you want more than what you see on these slides, if you want us to explain it, if you want us to pick and choose and just send you one or two, all you have to do is email us or call us and we'd be happy to do that for you. - [Voiceover] I just wanted to make sure because this is an awful lot of information all at one time, so go ahead Denise, sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt you. - [Voiceover] Oh, you can interrupt any time. I'm hoping that in the feedback, we wanna hear feedback about how you guys like this conversational approach because we did our dress rehearsal yesterday and we actually had a lot of fun making it in this talk show dress rehearsal sort of manner, we realized, you know, it's more relaxed, and there will, I'm sure that there will be some people who want the data and some people who want the conversation, so we're gonna be trying to appeal to the best of both worlds. - [Voiceover] We do. - [Voiceover] I think we do way too little of that kind of education around addiction of any kind, process addiction or substance addiction. - [Voiceover] Thank you for seguing nicely into one of the stories that I like to tell about the school system in Nevada, which is, as you well know, Nevada is dependent on gaming funds to fund our state, we are dependent on it and when the recession hit in 2008, 2009 and between then and now, there's been a 30% drop in gaming revenues and it's just barely starting to crawl back up again.
It hit the gaming industry very hard. Well, I remember when my children were in middle school, walking down the hall one day, and seeing this giant banner running the length of the entry hall into the middle school, Sparks Middle School, that identified Baldini's as their partner in education. And every now and then I'll still, on the internet, I'll see an invitation to fund or be involved in the Partners in Education Program. Partners in Education is a wonderful idea of how to assist any school that you want by taking funds and getting donations to assist the school in buying more of what they need. Well by picking Baldini's as their partner in education, Sparks Middle School, essentially, because you know the influence that that can have when you walk by a sign every day, 200 days a year, however many days you are in school and all the activities and the games and stuff, so the parents and the teachers and the students were certainly affected by seeing that sign every single day, that's probably my opinion is that is a rite of passage, when they get old enough, they're gonna go to Baldini's because that's who supported their middle school. Well, it enraged me, as you can imagine, because I have an over-reactive gland somewhere in my body when anything having to do with addiction and especially gambling comes up. And I looked around and I asked around, there was nothing in that school, even postage stamp size, that was of contrary or educational information like the 800 number or a little poster, I hang the posters in my office to this day, that I picked up years ago from Minnesota, which do some terrific visuals on a one poster image that grabs you, like you see on a bulletin board and go, "Whoa!" You're brain on drugs, the frying egg and the frying pan thing that sticks in all of our memories, well, there was nothing like that to alert people to the dangers, or the signs and symptoms, or the 800 number for gambling. That is where we have still failed in the state of Nevada, there is the 800 number for adults and any institution, establishment or corner, whatever, that has a gaming machine in it, you have to have the 800 number published. Thank you, gaming control board in 1998, they had to make that a law in the state of Nevada, however, there's nothing for our students who have as a contrary message and an alert to what gambling will do to their brains, to what gambling will do to their families, so thank you, Baldini's, for being a partner in education, I wish they would've shrunk the sign and made it a comparably same size sign for information about problem gambling. So those of you that are very interested in prevention, I hope that you will take some of our discussion today and take it forward to your roundtables and your places that you're gonna be making changes in the state of Nevada. That's one that needs to be made immediately that the Nevada Council is addressing in Clark County very well, they do take some of their money and they put bus stop signs in the little corners where you sit and wait for a bus and during March Madness, which is also National Problem Gambling Awareness Month is March. It's the perfect time to put problem gambling awareness out there on some kind of a billboard. Yes, but, there's a but in there, if Johnny's mom and dad have not been educated about the warning signs of a gambling disorder that could develop in their child and if they're clueless about the possibility that Johnny could be stealing stuff, including their stuff or their friend's stuff, to pawn or resell to get money to continue to gamble, they may be completely unaware of the fact that they have just made a nice little nest at home for the next... (silence) Carol O'Hara, the executive director and ask for what resources are available for you to use in your agencies, in your private practice, in your church group, wherever you want to show this video and get a good discussion going on, every time I've used the "Given the Chance" DVD in a mixed setting, that's not just clinicians, not just teachers, not just students, but a mixture of people, invariably, somebody comes up to me afterward and thanks me for educating them and bringing up the topic because they didn't know how to bring up the topic or they didn't realize that there were resources available. So that is definitely one of my all-time favorite resources if you contact the Nevada Council, ask them what they've got available, if you get it for free. - [Voiceover] Okay, this is Denise E. again.
I just wanted to mention a couple of things, just kinda brief overview, especially if you have no experience with the world of gambling at all, I was surprised that four in five Americans say they've gambled at least once in their lives. And I had no idea that with the exception of Hawaii and Utah, every state in the country offers some form of legalized gambling. And it's really interesting because even in those states, there's a high rate of gambling occurring in their border areas or their fly zones, like in Nevada, Wendover and Las Vegas, people come over from Utah and a lot of Hawaiians vacation on the mainland and that kind of thing. So when I was a kid, the only place, I'm pretty old, and the only place I can think of that had gambling was Nevada and then there was New Jersey and then there was Mississippi and now it's everywhere, so it's one of those things that just have sort of proliferated and we just need to be very aware and cognizant of. Plus, on top of all of that, all you need today to gamble is an internet connection or a phone. I'm sure that there's probably almost as many gambling sites on the internet as there are porn sites. Prevalent studies have determined that around two million people in the U.S. are addicted to gambling and as many as twenty million citizens the habit seriously interferes with their work or their social life, which is an article from Scientific America that I got this. And it was just really interesting when I was exploring this because although I believe that I do know something about gambling because I work in the field of addictions, it's just been quite an eyeopener to look at how prevalent and easy the different different access is to gambling. And the other thing that I thought was really interesting, too, is that adolescent gamblers tend to be male, tend to have more gambling problems than females, the average starting age of gambling is 12, which is younger than first use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs and then as Denise referenced earlier, gambling has an inherent element of risk and adolescence is a period of development that's characterized by high rates of risk taking and novelty seeking behaviors in a variety of settings. So gambling is just sort of tailor made for adolescent development, so I think it's an area where we have to be very cautious and make sure that parents are well-educated around especially in our area, around the the pitfalls, and the... - [Voiceover] Like signs and symptoms. - [Voiceover] Yes, exactly and I read another really interesting article and it said that 86% of parents are in favor of of restricting the accessibility of gambling to adolescents, however, 84% of parents would go out and buy their child a lottery ticket. So I think there's a lot of information out there where people don't get where gambling, what gambling is exactly and so I just think that educational component, I think it's really important and I actually think we need to do more in our schools, too. We are having a wonderful sunny escape in Nevada. We're here for 3 days so we're going to be road tripping. Road trip and this is awesome. I mean we're trading in what our winter jackets for shorts and t-shirts.
Our trip began in Las Vegas, but having already been there before, we wasted no time on the Strip. After a short night’s rest, we grabbed a hearty breakfast, hopped in our rental car, and hit the road for our first stop of the day: Lake Mead. So the plan for today is to go kayaking in Black Canyon but we still have a little bit of time this morning so we're stopping off in Lake Mead and also Hoover Dam. Both of those are along the way and there comes Sam. He's been taking pictures. Taking pictures along the trail. So did you get some good photos? Yeah, there is some pretty good shots but I think like you have to be walking along the path a bit further for you to get a better vantage point of the lake. Yeah, we're going to be making a lot of photo stops on this road trip this website. It is just so scenic. Like wherever you look. Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the US and it’s also a popular recreation spot, so we kicked off our morning with some light hiking and lots of photo taking, because just look at those views! So we just finished doing a little bit of hiking. Now we're heading back to our car and next up is Hoover Dam. Oh, and we also got a really fancy car. We got an upgrade so we're driving a Camaro. Chevy Camaro and I've got the keys in my pocket. So we have made it to Hoover Dam. We're going to skip the tour today but we're going to check the dam out. Hoover Dam is one of the most visited attractions in Nevada with as many as 1 million people taking the tour every year, and even more driving across the dam. Fun fact: there is enough concrete in Hoover Dam to build a 4 foot wide sidewalk around the Earth at the Equator. That’s a whole lot of concrete! So we've made it to Willow Beach. It is time to go kayaking. Sam has lathered himself up in sunscreen. Yeah, apparently this is going to be a 3 hour kayaking tour so yeah we do need lots of sunscreen. Especially for me. Alright, and the kayaks are already on the water so let's go. Let's do it. Kayaking in Black Canyon was the highlight of the day. We lucked out with blue skies, calm waters, and the scenery was pretty spectacular - especially once we entered the canyon where we were surrounded by rock walls. Halfway up stream we took a break from kayaking and went on a short hike. Our guide told us a little bit about about the flora and fauna you can find in this region. We also stopped at the Emerald Cave, which gets it’s name from the bright emerald green colour reflected in the water. It is day 2 on the road. Where are we off to next Sam? Day two, so we're going to the Valley of Fire. Ooh. We woke up relatively early. We're leaving just after eight so all packed up, all ready to go. Alright, let's go to the car. Let's hit the road. We had an hour’s journey to reach the Valley of Fire that morning, and it was a very leisurely drive down some scenic stretches of road. We knew we were getting closer to the park when we noticed the landscape colours started becoming more saturated. Alright guys so we're almost at the entrance for the Valley of Fire Park and we just keep stopping for photos. It is so scenic and the rocks are so red. Like the colors are so rich and saturated. So yeah, Sam is getting more photos and more video for us and then we're going to drive to the entrance and pay for our permit. Well, well. How are you enjoying the scenery? It is like absolutely amazing. We've just been stopping off a lot to snap photos. I keep saying Audrey pull over pull over we've got to get a shot of that so it has been really cool this morning so far. Once we entered Valley of Fire State Park, the fun begin. E-learning has been around since 1999, when the term was coined at a seminar in Los Angeles. Since then, the online learning industry has exploded with the advent of online courses, video tutorials and online degrees. While this industry grows, it is still in its infancy with room for innovation and new ways of connecting people through education of the community.
There are currently a handful of companies that provide this growing industry and offer most courses where participants download and complete course material provided by a guardian. Others offer video tutorials with limited access to Guardian and so answers are usually answered within a day or two. A slight majority offer very interactive lessons with a real person in real time. In saying that, there are many technologies that enable real-time teaching, with interactive features such as screen sharing, control screen, see and hear YouTube videos together and listen to the audio directly from each computer to others. Those in areas that lack resources for education are usually top of the list of users for online education. Especially in the West, we are more accustomed to free education at our door and just this is not the case in many countries, especially third world countries. Our education available spoils us and we often forget how much education they have on offer. But in third world countries, for example, access to education is limited or there is an ignorance of where to find that information. This gap limits us as a society and funnels so students in a race condemned in advance. We have now more than ever attention disorders through our schools, with many students citing its simple disinterest. Online education allows room for choice, SO a student can give 100% attention to your passion. Add variety to the styles of teaching with the use of interactive tools, students can be engaged at all times without distractions. Learn from an active member of the industry gives advice for actual use in a real situation. Most of those who teach online are college level, which could lead in the national program and many offer courses free initiation, so you can Hop Skip and Jump until you find the right teacher for you. The convenience of online learning has to be one at the top of the list, obviously not the travel and learn at their own time, at your own pace, with real-time responses, so if you have a question, or you need to write an essay on difficult topic, just ask and you will get a help. An obvious obstacle to learning is not to have the tutor physically there, but the key is in the name, e-learning, it is not a substitute for classical education, but it is definitely something to consider as an extracurricular. As with most online learning technologies is subject to technical gremlins and therefore it is better to have the right equipment. There is much to do to improve the audio and video quality. When connecting a microphone and a quality webcam, you can greatly improve quality. To improve your video lessons: Use a high quality external microphone. A high quality external webcam. Good quality headphones. A large computer screen. Wired internet connection (wireless connections can be unreliable). A speed DSL internet connection (768 kbps upload) or better (not dial-up connections). These days, you can do almost anything online. You can buy food, find a date, file their tax returns, and even become a star of the reality TV online. Why not go to school online? Online learning was viewed with suspicion, the same way people see these diplomas plant ads in the back of fashion magazines. He graduated from a respected college is simply not the same as the mail a certificate after separation from your credit card on a certain website. And because it is still new, many people do not really know what to expect, of course. Online learning can range from obtaining a college degree online for a short course in the use of a word processor to an online training module for the job. Regardless of how you plan to go, there are advantages and disadvantages of it. The Pros – One reason to go online route is that you work already and simply do not have time to attend classes in person. Want to learn new skills, but you can not take time off work. Online learning means that you need not waste time to and from classes and also means that is not limited by your location. – Online learning is often (but not always) cheaper than classroom learning. As a little bonus, it’s also a little easier on the environment, especially if all the materials are in electronic copy. – Online learning is accessible to people who might not normally be able to attend classes. For example, students with disabilities may find it easier to take online courses. Older students may also feel more comfortable online to attend classes on campus. – Although online learning has been criticized for its lack of face to face interaction, surprisingly, online discussions can get even more complicated than in the classroom. Shy students who do not normally speak in front of their classmates can join online anymore because it gives them the opportunity to think about their answers. Learning is all the time, because it is not limited to the planned classes. Less – The most common complaint about online learning is that there is no face to face interaction. Online learning may lack the spontaneous exchange of ideas that can not be achieved with classmates and a teacher in real time and space. Although you can still interact through chat and email, it is more difficult. Something that could be clear in a minute in person might make the effort of several emails back and forth. – Online learning can be dependent on technology. You can have access to high speed Internet to view training videos or download the necessary files. If something goes wrong with your computer, it’s just that much easier to miss a class or a deadline. – The class dropout rates online is really very high. Being able to pass through an online class requires a lot of discipline. People are motivated by the opportunity to socialize, compete and perform in front of others. Without these factors you grow, you may lose your money for not finishing the class. When it is more effective Given the advantages and disadvantages of online learning, it is likely to be more effective when you can bring together the best elements of learning in the classroom and online technology. For example, you can go for a course that would mark the interesting discussion with people from around the world. Or take a short work training module where you can review the documents with colleagues later. Online learning is a hot topic these days, as millions of dollars are invested in new technologies such as the Internet, with the hope that education at all levels has been revolutionized. Newspapers now have sections characteristics on the Internet and self-help technology books multiply. Technology is often hailed as the “magic pill” that will somehow provide solutions to organizational problems and policies that are endemic to adult education. Continuing education programs for adults and rushing to become actors in the new world of global technology, finding new applications while fearing “left behind.” The discussions seem to focus on the impact of technology on the delivery of online learning, but perhaps these discussions are a reflection of the past rather than to predict the future. Online learning technologies have historically been primarily used to expand access to classroom instruction in rural or remote sites. For most, online learning programs for adults have done with high levels of success long before the Internet or computer networks were profitable. Efforts to jump as a project in Mississippi and GOL TV programs are excellent examples of successful learning and effective online. In general, it is clear that online learning programs have exceeded their potential to enable adults in rural and remote communities have access to education. However, to facilitate access to “traditional classroom” sufficient reason to increase investment in new technologies such as video conferencing facilities and the Internet? The goal is simply to make a better mousetrap (faster ie issuing machine traditional instruction in the classroom)? We can improve our online learning programs cheap simple upgrade of existing transmission systems and existing cable. Instead, the emergence of new technologies allows us to change our approach to providing classroom instruction to deliver new materials and new ways to facilitate learning. In this environment, educational content issues, information resources, the theory looks and quality are paramount. The question is: “How can we carry the classroom” but rather, “What can we do with new technology to reform, change and improve adult learning?”? It is clear that we are not talking about learning, but begin to see distance education: o How learning looks when it is not bound by four walls and a teacher’s knowledge base? o How can we change our organizational structures that allow students to interact remotely with more than one instructor, other students, and a large amount of available resources? o How can we begin to conceptualize and implement experiences that take advantage of this new learning environment extended learning? The use of technology to create new models of adult learning may have an impact on the system of the provision of adult education. Adult education programs will become centers of learning rather than just places of learning. Does this mean that the formal classroom instruction will be considered obsolete and will be replaced? In fact, the number of classroom settings could increase as adults meet the educational needs of the new parameters. Those who had never considered entering an adult education program through the front door could soon go online, to their educational needs, to be motivated to learn and choose to participate in the classes of education adult interactions provided face-to-face. How successful we are moving from learning model of the family in line with the future model of distance education will depend, in part, on assumptions and make preparations now. We can begin to identify and plan what you want to happen. To shape the future, we must be proactive. To wait passively, we relegate the role of adaptation to technological change and environmental learning imposed on us, we offer five situations as starting points for developing a distance learning model: models will be improved or traditional online learning in the classroom are not replaced by new technologies. Based learning class will change, but the models will have an important and viable role. New technologies will be used to enhance formal learning. Students will have Internet tools at its disposal to help develop their own learning paths. Self-creation or learning activities will be commonplace. In the past, the resources necessary for personalization of learning are not available for teachers, students and many adults only. Network technologies, such as Internet databases and multimedia will significantly increase access to learning resources on a scale unknown in adult education. Distance education at some level, is on the personalization of learning for specific students. o teachers become facilitators of learning not transmitters of knowledge. Research has shown that advanced skills are not acquired through the transmission of facts, but per student to interact with the students learn content more effectively when they create, build and interact with knowledge and building its own meaning. o The future of learning is learning to connect with the world of work and at home. New technologies can provide these important links so that learning is relevant and skills developed in a configuration can be transferred to other contexts (home, work, school). Collaborative learning or stressed. Most adult learning emphasizes individual achievement and solving problems without the help of others. However, in the world of work and personal relationships, problem-solving partnership is no exception, but rather the role. Collaborative learning is process-oriented rather than isolated or single word answers questions. With the development of collaborative computing, adult learners in different locations can meet online to jointly solve problems anytime and anywhere. o staff development and teacher training should be continuous and permanent. Traditional staff development workshops models and presentations of the conference not meet the need of direct current technology. You will have to develop new methods of improvement and continuing education. The technology will help, but the development staff should be easily accessible. Planning for the future of distance education requires imagine how learning should change to a changing world. Distance education will only be effective if the earth and not focused on educational technology. The technology will be a powerful tool we use for continuous renewal, reflection and improvement. However, it is not in itself create a learning community of thousands of teachers and students to interact and to mobilize resources and at the same time construction and provide new resources. Only those with ideas can do this. |
